Fowler-Hoff tops WSOP bad beat list

2009-03-25 16:14:33

The hand that secured Hal Fowler the World Series of Poker main event crown in 1979 has placed first in a top ten of the worst bad beats in the competition's history.

Poker News suggested that to many, Fowler hitting his gutshot straight to best Bobby Hoff's pocket aces is head and shoulders above any other WSOP suckout.

Fowler only had a marginal lead in the heads-up match and had Hoff's far superior pocket pair held up against his seven-six offsuit, it is probable that he would have gone on to win the title that has eluded him throughout the rest of his career.

The famous hand beat Doyle Brunson's ten-two win against Jesse Alto's ace-jack in the 1976 main event to the top of the list, while Chris Moneymaker's elimination of Phil Ivey in the 2003 main event placed third.

World-Series-Poker.co.uk also mentioned the Brunson-Alto clash in a list of bad beats, with a hand between Al Ardebili and Ricardo Festejo on the World Poker Tour in 2005 listed as well.
