Florida law overhaul 'could see return of high-stakes poker'

A new proposal under consideration by the Florida senate could see high-stakes poker return to the state's casinos.

The Miami Herald reported on Saturday (March 28th) that an "ambitious proposal" to expand gambling could erase tournament buy-ins currently enforced in the state, which have deterred organisers from planning high-stakes events in Florida.

Some $1 billion in annual revenue could be generated for education under the proposals - which also include allowing games such as roulette and craps at casinos run by the Seminole tribe and slot-style video lottery terminals across Florida - according to some state senators.

Current state law caps most buy-ins at $100 or slightly higher in poker tournaments.

Florida residents keen to brush up on their poker skills in the next few weeks may be interested in attending a series of instructional workshops led by professional player Vanessa Rousso.

The sessions, entitled The Art of Poker, are inspired by the ancient text The Art of War and utilise Rousso's Duke University-educated background in game theory.
