Speaking at the poker table 'is a science'

2009-03-30 16:28:14

There is a science to what should and should not be said at the poker table, according to a Poker Player writer.

Mike Caro asserted that any player "can talk your way to success at poker", provided they have a "profitable hand".

He suggested that when done correctly, talking at the table could increase a player's power of persuasion and their subsequent profit.

Among the tactics he suggests are talking your opponents out of calling your bluff or by making other players suspicious if you want to be called.

However, he cautioned poker players to hone their psychology skills before they attempt persuasive speech at the table, as they could find themselves in a tough spot if their opponent catches on to what they are doing.

"In poker, speech matters," he concluded.

Last week, a study carried out by Cigital indicated that statistically, poker is a game of skill.

The data indicated that some 75.7 per cent of the 103 million hands investigated were won as a result of player betting, rather than by chance.
