Pearson next on WSOP best champion list

2009-04-03 15:12:44

Walt 'Puggy' Pearson has been named as the 37th best World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion of all-time in the latest edition of Bluff Magazine's top 40 countdown on the official WSOP website.

The four-time WSOP bracelet holder and the 1973 main event winner received credit from the publication for his widespread influence on the sport of poker, which it claimed "is immeasurable".

Pearson was one of the seven original competitors at the first WSOP in 1970 and was the only person to play each series between then and 2005.

He was main event runner-up twice before finally taking the title against Johnny Moss and is a member of the poker hall of fame, earning his place in 1987 before the likes of Doyle Brunson, Benny Binion, David 'Chip' Reese and Thomas 'Amarillo Slim' Preston.

Among his many accolades is the claim to inventing the freezeout tournament, which is the most common form of poker competition around today.
