Phillips takes down Venetian deep-stack event

2009-04-06 16:51:43

Dennis Phillips has claimed he is off to a successful start to the month after taking victory in a $550 buy-in event at the Venetian in Las Vegas.

The 2008 World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event finalist wrote in his blog that he is in Sin City for the next few weeks due to the host tournaments that are taking place and revealed that he outlasted almost 300 opponents to clinch the deep-stack crown over the weekend.

Phillips did not say how much money he earned for the triumph, but did suggest that the result was not simply down to the cards going his way.

He claimed that he lost seven of his nine races, yet still managed to become the chip leader and hold on to his position throughout the final table.

Phillips has been relatively quiet in terms of securing major live tournament cashes since finishing third in the WSOP main event in November.

In January he picked up $19,100 for finishing 17th in a preliminary event at the European Poker Tour Caribbean Adventure.
