Amarillo Slim makes WSOP champions list

2009-04-07 15:19:39

Thomas 'Amarillo Slim' Preston is the latest card sharp to make it on to Bluff Magazine's 40 Greatest Champions in World Series of Poker (WSOP) History list.

The legendary gambler - who holds four WSOP titles, including one for the 1972 main event - was 35th in the rankings and was dubbed by the publication as "perhaps the most colorful character in WSOP history".

Along with Doyle Brunson, Johnny Moss, Billy Boyd, Jack Strauss and 'Puggy' Pearson, he played in the inaugural WSOP in 1970 and picked up his first title in the no-limit hold'em world championship event two years later, with Pearson - the 37th greatest champion, according to Bluff - his heads-up victim.

He last won a bracelet in 1990 in a $5,000 pot-limit Omaha event. O'Neil Longson, who was 38th in the greatest champions list, was the runner-up.

Preston was inducted in to the poker's hall of fame in 1992.
