EPT San Remo attracts record numbers

2009-04-20 15:57:57

A record number of people have entered the European Poker Tour event in San Remo, Italy, which got underway on Saturday.

Day 1a saw 578 runners turn up, before a capacity 600 players on day 1b brought the total to 1,178 - the largest ever in Europe.

The field for the second day has now been cut to 469, with Dragan Galic's chip count of 107,800 from the first flight proving to be the highest.

Ljubomir Josipovic emerged from Sunday's action with 83,200 - leaving him in second place overall.

One man particularly pleased with the high turnout is Luca Pagano, who is acting as host for the tournament.

"I was already proud of last year's event, where we got 701 players, and I was going to be happy if we matched that number this year," he told PokerListings.com.

The €5,000 ($6,450) buy-in has created a prize pool of over €5.7 million, with the winner set to take home €1.5 million.

Last year American Jason Mercier was triumphant, netting himself €869,000.
