The All Japan Poker Championship (AJPC) gets underway next month, with a place in the sport's richest tournament on the line.
In addition to the AJPC bracelet, the winner is set to receive a place in the $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.
This year sees the third instalment of the Japanese tournament and entrants will have to go through qualifying events in order to earn the chance to compete, while Metropolis Magazine noted that separate competitions are also held for women and seniors.
The publication observed that the popularity of poker is steadily growing in the country and Ichiro Tanioka, chairman of the Japan Poker Association, explained that famous board game players have been invited in a bid to facilitate this.
Kunihiro Sakamoto was the winner of the inaugural AJPC in 2007, beating a field of over 2,000 players to earn the right to compete in the WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas.
