EPT Grand Final kicks off in Monte Carlo

2009-04-29 16:04:08

The European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final is underway at the Monte Carlo Bay Resort and Hotel, with 396 runners having entered on Day 1a.

Lee Nelson is chip leader after the first flight - with a count of 253,600 - and 223 players have progressed to the second day.

Nelson is followed by Luca Pagano on 169,600, but a number of notable names have already been eliminated from the €10,000 ($13,000) buy-in event.

They include Constant Rijkenberg - winner of the recent EPT event in San Remo - as well as Phil Ivey, who started well but went on to bust out in the opening rounds.

Among those remaining in contention are Daniel Negreanu and former World Series of Poker Europe Main Event champion Annette Obrestad.

Last year's EPT Grand Final was won by Glen Chorny, who took down more than €2 million after coming through a field of 842 competitors.
