WPT heads to Italy

2009-05-06 14:09:20

The first World Poker Tour (WPT) event to be played in Italy gets underway in Venice this week.

A WPT bracelet and a place in next year's WPT Championship - worth €25,500 ($33,880) - are on the line at the Casino di Venezia, with the main event concluding on Sunday May 10th.

Players begin later today (May 6th) with a stack of 15,000 chips in exchange for a €4,000+€400 buy-in and a number of smaller tournaments and cash games will also be taking place.

Founder, president and chief executive of the WPT Steve Lipscomb remarked: "We're thrilled to launch our first ever brick-and-mortar WPT tournament offering in Italy."

This year's WPT Championship was held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas last month, with 338 entrants.

Yevgeniy Timoshenko eventually took down the $2.1 million first prize - the 21-year-old beating Ran Azor in the heads-up by hitting a straight on the river in the final hand.
