Astrom takes down WPT Venice

2009-05-11 16:31:46

The first World Poker Tour (WPT) event to be staged in Italy has been completed, with Sven Ragnar Astrom taking down the top prize in Venice.

He beat fellow Swede Per Martin Jacobson in the heads-up, pocketing €397,960 ($540,540) as well as a place in the WPT Championship next year.

In the final hand of the day, Jacobson hit the nut flush on the river, but his opponent rivered a full house to clinch the title.

He had come through a field of 397 players who had paid the €4,400 buy-in at the Casino di Venezia.

Jacobson took home €238,840 for his runner-up finish, while Vincent Pasdeloup and Michael McDonald came in third and fourth respectively.

Meanwhile, Slovakia is the latest country to have been added to the list of stops on the European tour.

An event will be held in Bratislava, in addition to those in Venice, Barcelona, Cyprus and Marrakech.
