New enforcements at WSOP

2009-05-12 16:37:16

Players at this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP) are set to be handed stricter punishments for any outbursts that are deemed inappropriate.

Last year, Phil Hellmuth famously directed a torrent of abuse at a player during the Main Event, after being bluffed out of a $400,000 pot while television cameras were on him.

He received a warning over the incident, although some expressed concerns that he had been given preferential treatment.

And WSOP commissioner Jeffrey Pollack has now revealed that behavior will be more closely monitored, with one-hand and one-round suspensions being introduced in addition to warnings.

"After the episode with Phil, we reviewed our system of warnings and penalties," said Pollack.

Hellmuth is one of only four players to have won three WSOP bracelets in a single year - the others being Phil Ivey, Puggy Pearson and Ted Forrest.

The Poker Brat has also won more bracelets than anyone else - his total reaching 11 in 2007.
