WSOP to start today

2009-05-26 16:48:42

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) 2009 is set to get underway today at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

It will open with a casino employees no-limit hold'em event which will have a $500 buy-in and no re-buys.

After the last following it was announced that re-buys would be abolished in this year's competition after complaints from some gamers that they allowed high rollers to "buy bracelets".

The first major attraction at the felt in 2009 will be the 40th annual no-limit hold'em competition, which will feature a $40,000 buy-in.

With the large buy-in required for this tournament, it seems likely that it will attract many of the top names in the game.

Last year, the main event of the WSOP was taken down by Danish unknown Peter Eastagate, who defeated Ivan Demidov of Russia in heads-up play to claim more than $9 million in prize money.
