New $40k event begins at WSOP

2009-05-28 16:34:10

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) started earlier this week, but the first major event begins today with the $40,000 buy-in no-limit hold'em tournament.

Organized to commemorate 40 years of the WSOP, the event is the second most expensive in WSOP history.

The most expensive buy-in was in the $50,000 HORSE event last year and this tournament was won by Scotty Nguyen.

With such a large buy-in, some pundits suggest that this competition will be the one that truly establishes which are the best players in the world.

The main event has become a less reliable indicator because the huge field - topping 8,000 gamers in 2006 - does not favor the seasoned pros any more.

Poker pro Mike Matusow commented in his Card Player TV show: "If they've got $60,000 to play [with]… they're putting up $40,000 … they know that the winner of this tournament is going to be considered the world champion over the main event."
