Fitoussi leads day one of $40k event at WSOP

2009-05-29 16:38:37

When the chips were counted at the end of the first day of play in the $40,000 anniversary tournament at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), it was Bruno Fitoussi who led.

Some 201 players signed up to play in the competition, generating a prize pool of $7,718,400, with almost $1.9 million earmarked for the eventual winner.

Fitoussi led the field with more than 810,000 chips, putting him only a few thousand ahead of former WSOP main event champion Chris Moneymaker.

Moneymaker was the only other player at the felt to finish the day with more than 800,000 in front of him.

The closest to the former champion and Fitoussi was Emil Patel, who reached the 600,000-chip milestone with Lex Veldhuis.

Moneymaker's victory in the WSOP in 2003 changed the face of the competition because he was a complete unknown who earned entry into the $10,000 buy-in tournament after winning a $39 satellite.

The number of entries in the main event went up from 839 to 2,576 the year after Moneymaker triumphed.
