Bambos Xanthos wins World Heads Up Poker championship

2009-11-02 17:33:29

Greek Cypriot Charalambos Xanthos has been crowned World Heads Up Poker Champion after the three-day tournament in London.

The man known affectionately as Bambos claimed the first prize of £65,000, his biggest cash pot to date, at London's prestigious Victoria Casino.

His route to the final was not an easy one, with a tricky semi-final clash with Russian Victor Ilyukhin proving to be a particularly cagey affair.

Going into the match, the Russian was full of confidence thanks to the lucky pink shirt that he had worn all week.

Gambling site Card Player reported that Ilyukhin proclaimed before the match: "I know how Bambos plays."

However, his luck ran out and the Cypriot battled on to face Englishman James Mitchell in the final.

It was another close match, but the veteran Xanthos eventually opened up a three-to-one chip lead over Mitchell and closed out the match to seal the top prize.

His overall career earnings now total more than $800,000 (£487,000).
