Phil Ivey knocked out of WSOP

2009-11-09 16:50:17

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) will again see an outsider claim the famous gold bracelet after Phil Ivey was knocked out of the competition.

As the only recognised star to reach the final table, the man known as the Tiger Woods of Poker was eliminated by 46-year-old lumberjack Darvin Moon to finish seventh in the event.

He had been many pundits' pre-tournament favourite and remained so despite going into the final nine severely short-stacked, particularly compared to Moon, who started proceedings with close to $59 million (£35 million) in chips.

Ivey is one of the highest-earning poker players in the history of the game, but his undoubted ability was no help to him as Moon caught a lucky pair and knocked him out.

A major name from the world of poker has now failed to taste victory in the WSOP since the online gambling boom of 2003, which followed amateur player Chris Moneymaker's surprising tournament win.
