The senior director of ESPN has praised the decision to delay the final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the last two years.
Doug White told Card Player magazine that ratings for the overall tournament over the last two years were up on those for 2007 when poker fans would have known the result of the final table.
He said there was increased interest in the WSOP season as a whole and that the delayed table enables ESPN to increase the hype surrounding the final showdown.
"It allows us to tell stories
I just can't see how anybody who is actually at the event doesn't think this is good for poker and doesn't get goosebumps watching that," he commented.
While he accepted that "poker purists" might not be so keen on the delayed table, he claimed that he is yet to hear a convincing argument about how it hurts the game.
This year, Detroit gamer Joe Cada became the youngest-ever winner of the WSOP main event in Las Vegas, banking $8.5 million when he took down Darvin Moon in the heads-up.
