Brunson: Today's pros are not better than the old timers

2009-11-24 16:23:22

Veteran poker star Doyle Brunson has claimed that the standard of poker pros today is not higher than that of the older players.

In his blog on DoylesRoom.com, the ten-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner said he constantly monitors the standard of his play because he feels that gamers who reach the age of 50 often lose part of their game.

When musing on the current standard in the poker world, he commented: "Are today's players better than the old timers? Nah, different but not better."

At 74 years old, Brunson is still a regular face at the felt and as well as taking part in high-stakes games at the Bellagio, he also competes in some live tournaments.

He has cashed in three major events this year, including reaching final table of the WSOP $10,000 seven-card-stud hi-lo competition before busting out in seventh.

This weekend, 54-year-old Anthony Matias became the oldest European Poker Tour main event champion when he defeated 67-year-old Pierre Neuville of Belgium - the oldest finalist yet - in the heads-up.
