Yevgeniy Timoshenko has been named as the gamer with the most impressive breakout performances of the year.
Poker News said his wins at the World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championships and the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) made him standout from the other stars who emerged in 2009.
While 21-year-old World Series of Poker (WSOP) main event winner Joe Cada was a strong contender, he only made it into the number three position, behind Ville Wahlbeck, who stormed the WSOP, reaching four final tables, winning a bracelet and more than $1 million in prize money.
However, Timoshenko's winning far eclipse those of Wahlbeck at the WSOP - for his WPT win, he pocketed $2.1 million and his WCOOP victory earned him $1.7 million.
His WPT win was made all the more impressive by the calibre of his final table opponents, who included Scotty Nguyen, Bertrand Grospellier, Shannon Shorr and Christian Harder.
