New Zealand native wins SkyCity tournament

James Honeybone from Tauranga has landed the SkyCity Auckland Anniversary poker tournament, pocketing $36,000 in prize money.
The event had 121 participants, beating last year's number of entrants slightly, with local talent including comedian Mike King, Richard Lancaster (who finished in fifth place in the competition in 2009) and Brooke Howard-Smith, the New Zealand Herald reports.
Day two saw just 35 of the original line-up returning to the felt and this was further whittled down to the final table of nine by 19:30 local time on Monday (February 1st).
Honeybone was crowned as the champion after more than seven hours of play, with his jack-ace suited beating an individual known only by the mononym Oliver.
A Wellington native, Oliver pushed all-in with pocket kings to Honeybone's ace-jack suited, with the former hitting trips and the latter taking the title holding a flush.
The SkyCity Auckland Anniversary tournament follows the recent conclusion of the Aussie Millions main event, which saw Australian Tyron Krost emerge triumphant.
