Hellmuth: Amir was a great guy

2010-02-04 17:14:48

Poker professional Phil Hellmuth has stated that fellow player Amir Vahedi was one of the "all-time good guys", following the latter's death last month.

The usually brash Hellmuth noted that Vahedi was "loved by everyone", which the Poker Brat described as something of a miracle in the sport.

"I remember one evening where I decided to "Comp" Amir to an Oscar De La Hoya fight about five [years] ago," he said, adding: "We had a great time!"

Hellmuth, who has won 11 World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, said he was touched by the fact that Vahedi had kept an autographed bottle of champagne signed by him.

Vahedi, who was born in Iran, passed away on January 8th, reportedly due to complications of diabetes.

He won a WSOP bracelet in 2003 and also reached the final table of the main event in the same year, pocketing $250,000 for his sixth-place finish.
