An online qualifier has landed a seat in the PartyPoker Premier League IV tournament at the M Resort in Las Vegas.
Giovanni Safina, a civil servant from Sicily, beat competition from 15 other internet foes to secure his place in the $100,000 event.
Safina, who claims poker is "purely a hobby" for him, will now get to contest pots with the likes of Phil Laak, Daniel Negreanu and Tony G.
"To reach the Premier League was always my goal and I am incredibly happy," he remarked. "I have believed in myself since the beginning."
The 44-year-old said that any money he wins from the $1.5 million prize pool will be split down the middle, with 50 per cent going to his family and the other half being used as a future bankroll for cards.
Commenting recently on the Poker League, Phil Hellmuth stated that he intends to win it this year having come close on several occasions before.
