Holden: Poker is a game of skill not luck

2010-02-15 15:31:03

Poker is mostly about skill and should not be considered a game of luck, one expert has claimed.

Journalist Anthony Holden noted in an article for the Guardian that in comparison with other casino games - such as roulette - poker is a "mind sport".

Holden, who is currently the president of the International Federation of Poker (IFP), said it was important to differentiate between the two.

He remarked: "IFP is working to win poker recognition as a game of skill … on a par with chess and bridge and so to have it detached from anti-gambling legislation the world over."

Those who are talented enough can turn a profit at this particular card game, the specialist added, whereas roulette is nothing more than a lottery.

Holden is the author of Big Deal, a book based on his experiences of giving up his full-time job to become a professional poker player in the early 1990s.
