Making a final bet on the river is an excellent way of getting opponents to fold their hands, it has been claimed.
Writing for the Boston Globe, industry commentator Steve Rosenbloom noted that putting money in the middle on fifth street can help to run an opponent off the pot when they have a solid, but not spectacular, holding.
Using an example from the World Poker Tour's $15,000 buy-in Doyle Brunson World Poker Classic at the Bellagio casino in Las Vegas in 2008, Mr Rosenbloom suggested how effective a final stab at the pot can be.
A hand between tournament pro David Oppenheim - whose winnings for that year equalled $600,000 - and an unnamed player dubbed Seat 8 resulted in a split pot, despite the former feeling he had lost.
With a paired board, the card sharp's ace-three equalled the anonymous gamer's ace-jack for a divided share of the spoils.
"I felt lucky," Oppenheim said. "He could've won the pot very easily from me with a $4,000 [or] $5,000 bet."
