Poker enthusiast wins Olympic medal

2010-02-16 12:28:43

Admitted card-playing enthusiast JR Celski has secured a medal at the Winter Olympics.

Celski, who has been described as a "serious poker player", claimed bronze in the short track speed skating event at the Games, which are this year being held in Vancouver.

The 19-year-old American had only recently recovered from a collision on the ice that caused him to require 60 stitches to close up a gash on his left leg.

It occurred at the US Olympic trials when the American accidentally stabbed the limb with his right skate blade.

According to Bluff Europe, Celski is not the only medal-winner to enjoy a game of poker, with Michael Phelps also an avid fan.

Phelps, who has won a number of Olympic golds in swimming, recently competed in the Borgata Winter Open, where he outlasted professional players Adam Gerber and Paul Wasicka.

The athlete was eventually eliminated from the $2,000 heads-up championship by Jeff Madsen.
