Hellmuth blames bad poker year on fame

2010-02-18 17:17:57

Phil Hellmuth has said that while 2009 was his worst year on record, much of his problems were not because the overall talent of players has improved.

Writing for his official blog, the Poker Brat claimed that he became so popular people were coming up to him in the street every day.

Commenting on the experience, he said: "I would never wish that anyone ever felt whatever it was that I felt at that low point."

According to the 12-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner, the rise to stardom gave him physical ailments and caused him to miss out on sleep.

"My stomach was in knots, my stomach was in constant pain," he remarked.

The card sharp also attributed a portion of the blame to the Ultimate Bet scandal, in which Hellmuth won a pot from a fellow player while online - despite holding inferior cards.

While admitting no wrongdoing on his part, he stated the situation made him feel depressed.
