Maine casino vote set for June

2010-02-18 17:23:02

Proposals to build a casino in Lewiston, Maine will need to get approval from voters, it has emerged.

The gambling establishment will hit the ballot in June after the developers submitted over 1,700 signatures to push the matter into public hands, MyfoxMaine.com reports.

According to the news provider, construction of the venue is to cost $150 million, while property tax on the structure will generate a further $3.7 million.

Under the current plans, the state would also receive a percentage of the revenue accumulated through slot machines.

The casino is reliant on the consent of Lewiston citizens first and must then gain agreement from Maine residents as a whole.

Proponents of the gaming room say it will bring much-needed jobs and money to the region.

Casino Gambling Web recently reported that governor of Maine John Baldacci is against the expansion of establishments such as this and may block legislation that could see more built.
