Poker accepted as a game of skill

2010-02-26 10:58:10

Poker has been deemed a game of skill by the International Mind Sports Association.

The decision will see the International Federation of Poker (IFP) accepted as a member of the organization in April, meaning it is automatically recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

Welcoming the development, IFP president Anthony Holden observed that the game is not like others played in casinos.

"It's a social game where people are playing against each other - not the house - and a game where skill plays a bigger role than luck," he said, adding that the 120 to 150 million poker players in the world "deserve this recognition".

While poker is unlikely to become an Olympic sport, the status means it could join the likes of chess and bridge as part of the World Mind Sports Games in London in 2012.

Last year, a study by Cigital concluded that Texas hold'em games are more likely to be determined by skill than chance.
