Online poker 'driving the success of live tournaments'

2010-03-02 17:24:20

The increasing popularity of online poker is a central factor in the attendance levels of live tournaments, it has been claimed.

Writing for ESPN, Bernard Lee and Andrew Feldman noted events that allow individuals to qualify over the internet are significantly more successful than those that do not.

The pair used two recent competitions as an indicator of this: The North American Poker Tour (NAPT) Venetian main event and the World Series of Poker Circuit main event in Council Bluffs.

While the former had 872 participants - 400 of these coming from the net - only 46 attend the latter occasion in Iowa.

"Online registration for the NAPT created a solid base of players, which in turn created a buzz for others … to buy in directly or try to satellite into the event," they noted.

Internet amateur Andrew Lichtenberger recently told PokerListings.com that using his computer to play poker has given him the confidence to tackle live tournaments.
