Brunson: Comparing old and new players is impossible

2010-03-03 13:45:16

It is difficult to compare the quality of players from yesteryear compared to today's top competition because times have changed, Doyle Brunson has stated.

Writing for his official blog, the Grandfather of Poker said that in the old days many professionals were playing for their livelihoods and not just with their pocket money.

He remarked: "Many, many times they had their entire net worth in front of them. That makes it a lot harder to make these big bets when you didn't have much money."

Texas Dolly went on to say that in the modern era there is such popularity in the sport that a lot of the best competitors can earn cash simply through endorsements and sponsorship.

Old-timers are the "true gamblers", he remarked, but he added that some players still show traits such as these.

David Benyamine, Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey would all have succeeded in the past, the ten-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner acknowledged.
