Annie Duke takes down heads-up championship

2010-03-08 15:54:52

Annie Duke has emerged victorious from the 2010 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship.

She ultimately defeated close friend Erik Seidel in the final round, taking home the $500,000 top prize.

In doing so, Duke - who participated in the celebrity version of reality TV show The Apprentice last year - became the first woman to win the event.

She beat Dennis Phillips to earn a place in the final, with Seidel waiting to play the best-of-three contest after overcoming Scotty Nguyen.

The first match saw Duke take the lead after her pair held up against Seidel's flush draw on the flop, although it was all-square again after the short-stacked Duke pushed all-in and Seidel hit a straight in the second.

But he was unable to hold on to a lead in the decider and Duke doubled up to go in front before her pocket nines turned into a straight on the turn to give her the victory and send Seidel home with the $250,000 prize for second place.
