Scarborough "will benefit" from casino licence

2010-03-10 15:25:16

Scarborough will see the advantages of being granted a small casino licence once establishments begin to turn a profit.

This is the opinion of David Archer, strategic director for the local council, who noted in a report to the cabinet that the region should attempt to attract investors to the gambling sector quickly, the local Evening News paper reports.

"It is the view of the Casino Project Board that despite the current economic climate, Scarborough Council will benefit from being among the first to offer a 2005 Act casino licence," he remarked.

According to Mr Archer, inviting potential gaming bosses to put money into a new casino project will prevent them from seeking lucrative deals outside of the town.

Defined in the 2005 Gambling Act, a venue of this kind would be restricted to a maximum of 80 category B machines, with jackpots of a possible £4,000.

Earlier this month, local authorities in Leeds set out their proposals to build a super casino in the city.
