Duke calls for more women in poker

2010-03-11 13:17:49

Annie Duke has claimed she is unhappy with the percentage of female competitors currently playing poker.

Following her recent NBC Heads Up Championship victory, Duke noted that while the pastime has become more popular in recent years, women are still not a driving force.

She remarked: "Three to five per cent of the field was women in the 90s. Granted … there are more players in total, but the ratio is the same now."

According to the card sharp, who won over $2 million when she secured the World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions in 2004, the lack of female entrants in events is one of her "disappointments" with the current state of the game.

In his predictions for the Heads Up competition earlier this month, Daniel Negreanu noted in his Full Contact Poker blog that he expected Duke to lose her first-round match to fellow pro Andy Bloch.
