Duke winning Heads Up is a "surprise"

2010-03-12 16:09:18

Annie Duke's recent victory at the NBC Heads Up Championship has been labelled a "surprise" by one industry journalist.

Chris Tessaro, who regularly writes poker features for the Toronto Sun, noted that while Duke is a fairly competent player, her victory was definitely not expected.

He remarked: "In a field of 64 of the best players on the planet, Annie wouldn't have been a favourite to take down the title."

According to Mr Tessaro, the fast-paced format of the tournament has often thrown up some unlikely results, with American Pie star Shannon Elizabeth beating established pro Phil Ivey in the first round a few year's ago.

Even 2007 World Series of Poker main event winner Jerry Yang reached the final eight this year, which gives hope to every terrible player out there, he commented.

Writing for his Full Contact Poker blog recently, Daniel Negreanu claimed Yang had not achieved enough since triumphing in the WSOP to warrant an invitation to the one-on-one championship.
