Madsen: Bluffing is all about knowing when to give up

2010-03-16 15:57:59

Poker professional Jeff Madsen has claimed the key to a good bluff is about knowing when to quit.

The two-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner told Boston Globe journalist Steve Rosenbloom that faking a strong hand relies on weakness in an opponent.

"Sometimes I just know they're going to fold and sometimes I'm just kind of hoping, so sometimes I should just abort it," he remarked.

According to the card shark, players should evaluate the flop and compare it with what other competitors may be holding.

Being persistent with a bluff can pay off if everyone around the table has an average hand, he explained, so firing a couple of shots into the pot can pay dividends.

In certain situations, a dangerous-looking flop can be good for a potential bluff, as it may scare those at the table with marginal cards.

Madsen won both of his WSOP events in 2006.
