Jerry Buss: I love the competitiveness of poker

2010-03-29 13:51:38

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss has claimed he likes to play poker as a challenge.

In an interview with ESPN, the 77-year-old admitted there are very few things he can do at his age and still be competitive.

Buss added that the feeling he gets when he walks away from the table as a winner is one of personal achievement, in stark contrast to when his professional basketball team triumph.

"When the Lakers win, I kind of feel Los Angeles wins. And my family, in particular, wins," he remarked. "I don't have that individual feeling for the Lakers."

According to the enthusiast, poker requires good mathematical skills and while he acknowledged he is a slow learner, he has appeared on television in a number of high-profile tournaments.

This includes the 2003 World Poker Tour Pro-Celebrity Invitational, in which he placed second.

Buss also finished third in a World Series of Poker seven-card stud event in 1991.
