Hand selection 'depends on a number of factors'

2010-03-30 16:28:33

Choosing what hands to play and what ones to fold depends on a number of different scenarios.

This is according to Steve Rosenbloom, writing for the Boston Globe, who said even distinctly average holdings - such as queen-seven - can be profitable in the long run.

He noted that position, chip stack and the odds an individual is getting if they decide to call are all factors that should be considered before someone mucks their cards.

"There isn't a poker text in the world that would encourage you to play queen-seven, even suited," he remarked. "But like all things in poker, it depends."

Mr Rosenbloom used pro Greg Raymer as an example, citing a hand in the 2009 World Series of Poker main event in which the card sharp won a lucrative pot playing queen-seven of clubs in position.

In poker terminology queen-seven is called the computer hand, allegedly because simulations have shown it to win close to 50 per cent of the time against two random cards.
