James Mitchell lands Irish Open title

2010-04-07 14:54:56

A British poker player from London has come away as this year's winner of the Irish Open.

The tournament, which is the world's longest-running no-limit Texas hold'em event outside of the World Series of Poker, attracted 708 competitors from across the globe.

However, it was James Mitchell who lifted the trophy after being just one card away from losing heads-up to fellow finalist Irishman Paul Carr.

Mitchell found himself trailing with ace-six to Carr's pocket queens before hitting one of the three remaining aces to stay in the running.

The final hand saw Carr shove all his chips into the middle on a bluff, with the Londoner calling for the victory.

For coming first he received €600,000, while Carr was forced to settle with the €312,600 second-place prize.

Well-known poker pros in attendance included Dan Harrington, Neil Channing, Brian Townsend and last year's winner Christer Johansson, although none made it through to the final table.
