Coren: Weak raises can get players in trouble

2010-04-12 12:54:26

Victoria Coren has claimed that not putting in a sufficient raise can lead to players getting in trouble during key pots.

Writing for her column in the Guardian, the poker enthusiast said that weak raises will often not scare off opponents who are holding marginal hands or those who are drawing to a better holding.

"Before every bet you make, ask yourself what you want it to achieve. If you don't know, don't bet," she advised.

According to Coren, there is no harm in folding average cards if raising is too dangerous or checking shows a lack of strength.

Winning a poker tournament is a combination of both skill and luck, she explained, but by betting weakly into a pot, many players invite bad fortune through their actions.

Coren is the author of For Richer For Poorer: A Love Affair with Poker, a look at her experiences within the industry.
