Coren defends "disgusting" slow-roll

2010-04-15 12:18:54

Victoria Coren has defended the actions of a German poker player who slow-rolled pocket aces at the World Cup of Poker 2010.

During the hand in question, Sascha Cornils found ace-ace and raised to 8,000 chips before Canadian Darius Suharto pushed all in for 76,000 with pocket kings, Ms Coren noted in her Guardian column.

At this point, Cornils called a time-out to think over the decision to call, although he had the strongest possible starting hand - known as slow-rolling.

While commentators described it as "disgusting and pitiful", Coren said his antics could have been genuine hesitation.

"It is just about possible that Cornils, an amateur player, proudly representing his country, was suddenly terrified of knocking out his team," she remarked.

With five cards to come, he might have needed the time to go over his decision, the poker enthusiast added.

Coren cites her love with poker as resulting from her father and brothers being frequent gamblers.
