Knowing when to fold is vital, says Coren

2010-04-21 12:36:07

Victoria Coren, writing in her Guardian column, was commenting on a hand between Barry Boatman and Phil Laak.

Boatman was dealt six-four suited and the flop brought jack-four-four, leaving him with trips.

Phil 'The Unabomber' Laak bet £700 ($1,080), which Boatman then called, with the turn bringing a seven of hearts.

After Laak staked £2,100, it left Boatman with a difficult decision, as Coren stated that "flat-calling is no longer an efficient option".

Fearing that he may lose big, Boatman folded the hand and it turned out that Laak had ace-jack suited.

And this is why Coren believes that Boatman showed great "poker wisdom", as in a cash game there will always be better spots.

She recently defended a German player who slow-rolled pocket aces, a move that caused commentators to describe it as "disgusting".
