Victoria Coren: All-in culture is bad for poker

2010-04-30 16:49:58

Poker players need to make sure that they do not go aimlessly chasing the prize, it has been suggested.

Victoria Coren, writing in her Guardian column, noted that admiration for the "kamikaze" player can be misplaced.

"A player who makes an incorrect fold is considered weedy or cowardly, while a player who makes an incorrect all-in move is admired regardless," she said.

According to Coren, this is being driven by the TV, high-risk culture that is taking over the game.

The all-in ethos that is developing in the young players now is a dangerous development, she observed, as it is pointless winning big if a person is going to lose it all again by continually throwing all their chips into the pot.

In a previous entry, the poker enthusiast remarked that it is vital that a card sharp knows when to fold their cards and pointed to a hand between Barry Boatman and Phil Laak to illustrate her point.
