Dusty Schmidt: Young poker players should go for it

2010-05-24 12:41:37

Not having a lot of money can sometimes act as the spur needed to make a successful poker player, it has been suggested.

Dusty Schmidt, writing in his official blog, observed that a combination of being "young, broke and hungry" can help someone who is trying to follow their dream.

While he does not advocate everyone giving up work and trying to become a card sharp, he said: "It may not be such a bad idea for a kid with a strong work ethic and a dream."

His own story is slightly mirrored in these comments, as Schmidt put his last $1,000 into online poker to try and find the $1,500 he needed to pay his bills.

Ultimately, he was successful and he urges others to follow in his footsteps, stating: "Because even failures can be a great lesson".

Schmidt is the author of the book Treat Poker Like A Business, which tries to advise individuals on how to approach the sport.
