Fred Berger takes WSOP Circuit gold

2010-05-24 11:26:02

Fred Berger has bucked the usual trend for winning World Series of Poker-related events.

At the WSOP Circuit meeting in Harrah's New Orleans, the card sharp lifted his first gold ring, eight years after claiming a WSOP bracelet.

By triumphing in the poker tournament - in what was the final outing for the 2009-10 series - he won $197,584 in prize money, as well as a seat at the WSOP main event.

"I plan on giving ten per cent of my winnings to charity," Berger stated afterwards. "The rest of the money - I'll give it to [my wife]."

He added it would mean she might stake him in the future.

The field was made up of a number of well-known poker professionals, including six-time WSOP title holder TJ Cloutier, who is also a member of the Poker Hall of Fame.

As a result of his win, Berger will be able to rub shoulders with card sharps such as Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Tony G in Las Vegas later this year.
