Bluffing 'is a dangerous game'

2010-05-25 14:52:02

Bluffing is a tricky business in poker and knowing when to show a successful bluff is even harder.

Steve Rosenbloom, writing in the Boston Globe, noted that deciding whether or not to show the cards after bluffing depends on the situation.

He used a hand that Faraz Jaka took part in at the World Poker Tour's $15,000-buy-in Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic at Las Vegas' Bellagio in 2009.

Jaka - the current World Poker Tour Player of the Year - flat called his opponent with nine-seven suited and the flop was queen-jack-eight, two clubs, giving him a gutshot straight and backdoor straight flush draw.

After successive bets under half the pot, Jaka decided his opponent was playing weak as he did not have anything more than an underpair.

Jaka bet $120,000, with only $60,000 in the pot, which was enough to bring the fold and the money to him.

"The reason why I did it was because I didn't think he was too good of a player and he had been raising a lot, so I wanted to put some pressure on him," he said.
