WSOP winners to give money to charity?

2010-05-27 14:09:46

Players cashing at the 2010 World Series of Poker (WSOP) are being offered the opportunity to donate part of their winnings to charity.

Tournament sponsor Harrah's Entertainment is aiming to benefit the Nevada Cancer Institute by encouraging participants to contribute.

And the payout programme will be set up in such a way that competitors can easily donate one per cent of their taking.

"Poker players are among the most generous and charity-conscious people on the planet," said a statement from Harrah's, adding events throughout the year raise cash for a variety of causes.

Among them is the Omar Sharif Poker and Backgammon Tournament, which Card Player noted took place this month and saw more than £110,000 raised for One to One - a children's charity.

This year's WSOP is the 41st instalment of the event and will include Ante Up For Africa, a charity tournament that will be hosted by Don Cheadle and poker professional Annie Duke.
