WSOP gets underway in Las Vegas

2010-05-28 16:47:03

Card sharps from across the globe are descending on Las Vegas as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) gets underway today (May 28th).

A total of 57 bracelets are on offer at the 41st installment of the event and organizers highlighted the fact it attracts amateurs as well as seasoned professionals.

With an estimated 100 million poker players around the world, it noted each of the 60,000 participants expected to arrive between now and July 17th represent 1,700 people.

Stressing the notion that "to play is to win", the official website pointed to a main event entrant at a recent tournament who was 96 years old.

And with ESPN broadcasting the event, it said of the coming weeks: "Flick on a television at any hour of the day or night and you're more likely to see a WSOP broadcast than any other sport."

Sponsor of the WSOP Harrah's Entertainment this week encouraged those who cash to donate one per cent of winnings to charity.
