Michael Mizrachi wins Players Championship

2010-06-02 16:45:42

The inaugural World Series of Poker (WSOP) Players Championship has been taken down by Michael Mizrachi.

A total of 116 runners entered the event, with Mizrachi pocketing more than $1.5 million and the coveted gold bracelet after beating Russian Vladimir Schmelev in heads-up.

The final hand saw Schmelev all-in with queen-eight against the American's queen-five, with a five on the turn proving decisive.

Mizrachi, known as The Grinder, has accumulated close to $9 million in total earnings and has been one of the most successful poker professionals of the last six years.

However, the victory marked the first time he has won a WSOP bracelet.

And with brother Robert finishing in fifth place, organizers noted it was the highest finish by two family members in the history of the WSOP.

This year's Player of the Year Award was launched at the Las Vegas event, with points being awarded for how high participants finish in WSOP open tournaments.
