"Super-tight" play rewarded in WSOP, says Coren

2010-06-02 09:29:10

Victoria Coren has praised the "super-tight" play of the first winner at this year's World Series of Poker (WSOP).

Hoai Pham, a Vietnamese dealer who has impeccable dress sense - according to Coren - picked up more than $70,000 for his efforts, on top of the bracelet.

And writing in her Guardian column, Coren said that he is likely to be the last player to win the tournament with a pair of aces.

"Two tables from the end, he twice folded ace-king rather than race for the chip lead," she added.

This method eventually brought him success, after a grueling 15-hour session that did not end until 05:00 local time.

Coren remarked she was impressed with Pham's tactics and added: "Playing tight and waiting is the lucrative way to go."

The poker enthusiast stated if she was in Las Vegas and taking part in the WSOP, she would be inclined to do a lot of folding herself, as there are too many people overplaying hands.
